Global Energy Facts |
|
- Though accounting
for only 5 percent of the world’s population, Americans
consume 26 percent of the world’s energy.
- America uses about
15 times more energy per person than does the typical developing
country.
- The average American
consumes six times more energy than the world average. Every time
we fill up our cars or open our energy bills, we notice the cost
of that energy.
- A typical family
spends about $1,200 a year on home utility bills, $100 a month.
How much does your family spend?
- The U.S. Federal
government pays an $8 billion annual energy bill. If all Federal
agencies purchased energy-efficient products, the U.S. could immediately
save about $900 million per year and reduce annual greenhouse
gas emissions by 11 million metric tons of CO2.
- Energy production
and use account for nearly 80% of all air pollution, nearly 90%
of heat trapping greenhouse gases, and more environmental damage
than any other human activity.
- Globally, each year
we pump 20 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere,
which amounts to four tons for every man, woman, and child. Of
this amount, the U.S. is responsible for one quarter, or five
billion tons per year.
- Over 90% of natural
gas used in the U.S. is domestically produced.
